California man sentenced for cocaine trafficking

A California man who brought cocaine into another state received a sentence of 13 years for drug charges recently. He was one in a group of three men who were caught during a raid in January 2011.

The investigation began when Rhode Island state police were tipped off that a large quantity of cocaine was brought into the state in the cargo area of a tractor-trailer truck and held in a storage unit. The police believe that a Mexican drug cartel was behind the shipment and that the men were tied to this illegal organization.

The defendant received 13-year sentences to run concurrently for possession and conspiracy to distribute cocaine. This means that he will be serving all of his time during the same period. Had the judge sentenced him to consecutive sentences, he would have to completely serve one sentence before beginning another.

While the defendant has been convicted and sentenced, the defense of his case does not end there. If there are any grounds for appeal in this case, a criminal defense attorney can assist the defendant in taking his case through the appeals process. While defendants may be convicted of serious crimes, it is also possible that some procedure in the process leading up to the conviction was done erroneously. If that is the case, the criminal defendant may have grounds for a new trial or a review of his or her case.

Anyone who is facing a serious criminal charge should have good legal advice before making any pleas or speaking to authorities. It is very important for criminal defendants to seek legal representation to protect their rights.
