Man driving wrong way on I-280 arrested

Drivers spotted a car going the wrong way on California Interstate 280 on March 21 and alerted the highway patrol. A 60-year-old San Bruno man was arrested for alleged drunk driving a short time later.

The man was traveling on Interstate 280 near Farm Hill Boulevard in Woodside. His car was going south in the northbound lanes. The highway patrol officer created a traffic break, used his vehicle to block the man's path. The car going the wrong direction came to a halt after lightly tapping bumpers with the patrol car. The driver was stopped earlier in March for another DUI charge.

The fines and penalties for drunk driving in California increase with the number of convictions. A first-time offender can receive a prison sentence of up to six months, a fine of up to $2,600 and a license suspension of up to 10 months. In some cases, conviction on a first offence can result in the installation of an Interlock Ignition Device. This is a mechanism that requires the person convicted of DUI to breathe into a tube before his or her vehicle will start.

Drunken driving charges have potentially serious consequences that include prison time, fines and mandatory alcohol rehabilitation programs. It may be possible for a criminal attorney to review the case to see if it's possible to have it reduced to a "wet reckless." This is a plea made with the prosecutor that essentially reduces the charge to reckless driving with alcohol involved. This is generally available to individuals who had a borderline blood alcohol content test or for a first offense.
