Long trial results in seven gang members' murder convictions

A jury of nine men and three women in California returned guilty verdicts after less than four days of deliberation for seven gang members accused of murder. Their conviction culminated a six-month trial and is the result of a violent attack on a teenager at a party, ending with the young man being stabbed 25 times, resulting in his death. The deceased was not a gang member. The seven gang members repeatedly stabbed and beat the deceased with a baseball bat, resulting in a skull fracture. Two of the gang members, who delivered the fatal injuries, were convicted of first-degree murder, and the other five of second-degree murder.

The convicted gang members are facing possible sentences of life without parole for the first-degree murders, and for second-degree murder, from 15 years to life. Several witnesses, including a relative and other gang members, came forward to testify against the seven men.

The trial experienced several delays. The longest one was due to the prosecutor concealing critical evidence, including a knife that was found by police in a sewer, from the defense attorneys. That prosecutor was suspended and replaced.

When anyone in California is charged with taking the life of another, they could be facing serious punishment, including life imprisonment or even death. Whether they are charged with first or second degree murder, vehicular, non-vehicular, voluntary or involuntary manslaughter, drunk-driving murder or capital crimes, a seasoned criminal lawyer who specializes in violent crimes could help the accused deal with the potential consequences, explore the best available legal options and help them to build a strong defense.
