Three California residents facing drug charges

Two men and one woman were taken into custody after the Sacramento Sheriff's Department served search warrants on a residence in the 8000 block of Voula Way in Wilton on Sept. 25. Police officers allegedly seized one shotgun, two handguns, more than 100 marijuana plants and more than $80,000 in cash. The three people were cited with drug charges in connection with suspected cultivation and sale of marijuana.

Several agencies cooperated on the operation, including the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, Citrus Heights Police Department, Sacramento Police Department, Folsom Police Department, Sacramento County Probation Department and members of the Drug Enforcement Agency. The operation was part of a federally funded anti-drug program, the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program which coordinates and supports drug control efforts of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The program provides support for agencies by providing technology, equipment, coordination and other resources as part of an effort to combat drug trafficking in important areas of the United States.

Drug trafficking charges are very serious and may result in severe consequences for those who are convicted. An experienced California criminal defense attorney might be able to minimize the impact of drug charges for a defendant. In the U.S., citizens have legal protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. If law enforcement did not properly serve a warrant before searching an individual's residence and seizing their property, they may have violated the defendant's rights. That may constitute grounds for the dismissal of the case.

Alternatively, the attorney might suggest a plea bargain. The prosecution may be open to negotiating a plea agreement. The defendant might agree to plead guilty or enter a drug treatment program in exchange for reduced charges and penalties.
