10 charged with selling crack near California school

Ten people have been accused of drug trafficking near a school in San Francisco, according to the U.S. Attorney's office. If convicted, maximum sentencing could mean up to 40 years in prison and up to a $2 million fine, with a minimum of one year spent in jail. Jail time may be followed by supervised release, which can range from six months to life.

In separate one-count indictments, the alleged drug traffickers were charged by a federal grand jury for dealing crack cocaine near elementary schools. The indictments came as the result of an anti-drug effort that combined forces of the San Francisco Police Department with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, according to a statement released on Monday.

According to law enforcement officials, the drug problems in the Tenderloin District are being dealt with aggressively. Authorities also warned that more charges could be on the way. The U.S. Attorney said that the thousands of children who go to school in the Tenderloin District should not have to avoid drug deals on the way to school. She also said that those children deserved the same chances as other children receiving an education in the San Francisco area.

When individuals are faced with drug charges, they may work with a criminal defense attorney and might attempt to have the charges against the dropped. In some cases, if a conviction is likely, an attorney may suggest pursuing a reduction in charges and the related penalties. After reviewing the evidence presented against a client, that defense attorney may be able to negotiate with the prosecution for reduced charges or a plea bargain, which exchanges a no-contest or guilty plea for mitigated sentencing.
