1 man in custody in California home invasion robbery

A 20-year-old man was taken into custody and a second person is being sought in connection with a home invasion robbery that occurred in Merced on Aug. 23. Allegedly, one man carried a hatchet and the other a firearm.

Authorities say that the two men entered the home and attempted to rob a resident. According to reports, all of the residents of the home locked themselves into a bedroom and called 911 except for one individual who was forced into a neighboring backyard. The police claim that the men entered that backyard and attempted to enter that house as well.

Reports allege that one man ran away when police arrived while a 20-year-old man, who police believe is a gang member, pretended to be unconscious in the backyard. No one was injured in the suspected robbery, but there are reports that a shot was fired.

Violent crimes, such as home invasion, may carry severe penalties upon a conviction. Anyone accused of such a crime may wish to consult an attorney regarding a defense strategy. An attorney may raise doubts about the police procedures used when a defendant was detained. Another option could be a plea bargain in exchange for a lighter sentence.

People in similar situations as the defendant in the story might plead innocent and argue that they have been misidentified. They might also opt for a plea bargain or argue that their involvement in the incident was minimal compared to that of other defendants. A criminal defense attorney could advise a person on a prudent course of action.
