3 suspects detained on robbery charges in California

Sources indicate that three California men were taken into custody and two more were at large following two robberies that occurred on Dec. 19 in Fresno. The first robbery happened shortly before 6 p.m. and allegedly involved a gun. The second occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Both robberies were reported to police, and the description of the individuals involved was similar in both incidents.

33 people detained in California for gang-related crimes

A coordinated operation between multiple California agencies over the last several months led to the arrest of 33 individuals and the seizure of 30 weapons. The operation was conducted jointly by the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department, the San Bernardino Police Department, the County Probation Department, the Highland Police Department and the FBI. Authorities say that the effort was a response to an increase in robberies, carjackings, drive-by shootings and overall gang activity in the area.

Innocent until proven guilty

The United States legal system, as implemented in California and all other states, has at its core the presumption of innocence. In the eyes of the law, every defendant is innocent until proven guilty. This provides protection against unjust accusation and trumped-up charges -- the burden of proof rests squarely with the prosecution, and to obtain a conviction, the prosecution must provide sufficient evidence to prove the defendant committed an unlawful act.
