Man held on bank robbery charges

A 27-year-old California man has been to taken into custody under suspicion of being a bank robber known as the Cal Bear Bandit. Authorities say the man robbed a branch of the Union Bank in Westminster on the afternoon of Dec. 5.

After passing a note to the teller, the man allegedly escaped in a taxi. Witnesses passed the taxi's number on to police who located the cab shortly after and pulled it over. However, authorities say the man then carjacked the taxi and drove it about a minute away before crashing into another vehicle in Santa Ana. According to police, the man ran away, but he was apprehended shortly after. Three people from the vehicle that was hit were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police say the Cal Bear Bandit robbed at least seven banks over a five-month period. In September, the FBI released a photo of the man allegedly robbing a Bank of America.

Individuals who are charged with serious crimes like bank robbery with violent crimes may wish to work with an attorney on their defense. One option for an individual charged with a serious crime like this one is a plea deal. In a plea deal, the individual enters a guilty plea and might face lesser penalties.

An attorney might also look for irregularities in the investigation or in the process of detaining an individual. If an individual's rights are violated, some or all charges may be dismissed.

Finally, the evidence on some charges may not be very strong. For example, if authorities say that an individual is suspected of multiple crimes, they may only have enough evidence to convincingly link the individual to one or two. The individual might plead innocent to some charges.
