Car sought in California gang shooting leads police on chase

A car sought in connection with an alleged gang shooting led police on a high-speed pursuit from San Jose to Pleasanton on March 9. The incident began at approximately 11 p.m.

According to authorities, a 20-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting in San Jose on March 7. His death was believed to be tied to the Sureño street gang. At a memorial vigil held for the victim on March 9, another shooting took place around 9:30 p.m.

At approximately 11 p.m., San Jose police saw a Ford Fusion matching the drive-by car's description in the area of South Almaden Avenue and Oak Street. They tracked the car through East San Jose and onto northbound Interstate 680. Officers reported that a gun was thrown out of the car near the Washington Boulevard exit in Fremont. When the California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit, speeds approached 100 mph. The chase ended when a rear tire on the car blew near Bernal Road.

CHP arrested all five occupants in the Ford, and San Jose police located the handgun allegedly thrown from the vehicle. The defendants have not yet been identified. Authorities said they were being questioned.

Individuals accused of gang crimes may wish to immediately retain a criminal defense attorney. Legal counsel could provide guidance during police interrogations and work to protect a defendant's rights throughout their time in custody. After reviewing the details of the case, an attorney could recommend the best course of legal action. If the evidence is weak, a defendant may choose to plead innocent to the charges and fight the allegations in court. In other cases, it may be advisable to accept a plea deal that reduces some charges in exchange for a guilty plea.
