Odom may be facing drug charges after possible overdose

California NBA fans likely remember when Lamar Odom spent time as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers as well as the Los Angeles Clippers. They also may have followed his turbulent relationship with Khloe Kardashian through gossip columns and reality television shows, and Odom's near-fatal drug overdose in October 2015 at a Nevada brother made national news. It has been reported that, in addition to his health problems, Odom may be facing drug charges in connection with that incident.

In November, the Nye County District Attorney issued a statement that his office had been asked by the Nye County Sheriff's Office to review a request that Odom be prosecuted for using and being under the influence of a controlled substance. The Nye County prosecutor also said that his office will review all available evidence in order to come to a decision on that request.

It had also been reported that authorities had done blood testing work on Odom shortly after the incident in which he was found unconscious and that the test came back positive. Witnesses who were with Odom during his stay at the Love Ranch in Pahrump and who were questioned by investigators said that they believed that he had been using cocaine and possibly other illegal drugs.

Drug charges, such as cocaine possession, are taken quite seriously in the state of California as well as in Nevada, and the possible penalties can be severe if a conviction is obtained, including fines and potential incarceration. A person who has been issued cocaine possession charges may find it advisable to meet with a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible in order to construct a defense strategy to use before or at trial. If it is the defendant's first offense, legal counsel might attempt to negotiate an agreement with the prosecutor in which the defendant would agree to enter and complete a drug diversion program in exchange for a plea of guilty.
