6 UC-Santa Cruz students face drug charges

Law enforcement officers with the Santa Cruz Police Department reportedly took six University of California, Santa Cruz students into custody on March 4. The students were alleged to be involved in a $100,000 drug ring selling MDMA, also known as Ecstasy.

All six who were charged are 21 years old and are members of either the Alpha Kappa Delta sorority or the Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity. Police allege that all six reportedly shipped packages of Ecstasy tablets from overseas into the United States in order to sell them to others. The police state the packages were addressed to arrive at the student's homes at three different locations in the city. Police waited until the deliveries were made on March 4 and then served search warrants at each address. Police seized 5,000 tablets worth around $100,000.

They also reported that the Department of Homeland Security had seized an additional package before it could be delivered. Four of the students are now facing charges of possession with intent to sell and conspiracy while the remaining two are charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Drug trafficking charges are extremely serious and may lead to substantial prison sentences if a conviction is obtained. People who are facing such charges may want to meet with a criminal defense attorney at the earliest opportunity. An attorney can often mount a constitutional challenge to the searchthat led to the discovery of the drugs. In the event that it was a first offense, there is sometimes a possibility of obtaining a favorable plea agreement with the prosecution that could reduce the severity of the penalties.
