Brothers of California council member gunned down

Two brothers of the first Latino member of the Compton City Council were shot in East Los Angeles on the night of Feb. 22. One of the men was killed. The crime was gang-related, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Media reports said the brothers were walking near their mother's home when a male gunman came up and shot them. One of the victims, age 27, was shot multiple times in the chest. The other was wounded in the foot. The suspect hopped into a waiting SUV and fled the scene. Both victims were transported to a local hospital where the 27-year-old was pronounced dead after going into cardiac arrest.

The council member posted a tribute to his deceased brother on Facebook and said he was thankful his other brother survived the attack. He said it was his duty to ensure his brother's death "is not in vain" and to provide a good example for his kids.

California residents charged with murder or other violent crimes can face harsh consequences in the event of their conviction. Typical penalties include steep fines and lengthy prison terms. However, a defendant may be able to fight the charges by meeting with a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible in order to begin to construct a defense strategy. An attorney could ensure a client's rights are protected during police questioning. In some cases it could be possible to claim that the defendant was reasonably acting in self-defense. If it was part of gang-related activity, there could be an agreement reached with the prosecutor that would involve a plea of guilty to a lesser offense in exchange for testimony against other defendants.
