Researchers developing spit test for THC concentration

Researchers at Stanford University in California have been working on a test that can screen drivers for marijuana use. As many more states are beginning to consider legalizing the drug, law enforcement has struggled to find a roadside test for impairment that is equivalent to the Breathalyzer. THC can only be detected through blood or urine tests conducted in a lab. However, researchers say that the new mobile device can test for THC in minutes.

In latest commutations round, Obama commutes 111 sentences

Californians might be interested in learning that President Obama recently commuted the sentences of 111 more federal prisoners. The most recent round of commutations occurred on Aug. 30, bringing the total number of inmates who have received commutations since Obama took office to 673 people.

Health crisis spurs potential ban on synthetic drugs

On Aug. 26, the Los Angeles City Council adopted an emergency measure that requests an ordinance be created to ban synthetic drugs such as spice. That particular drug was blamed on an outbreak that left 50 people dead in the Skid Row part of downtown. If created, the ordinance would ban the use, sale and possession of novel synthetic or psychoactive drugs. It also calls on the governor of California to close loopholes in other laws already banning such substances.

California arents can reduce teen drinking

Research suggests that parents may be able to reduce the odds of their teen drinking just by having clear rules against it. This was one of the findings of a survey involving 1,100 people between the ages of 15 and 20 who lived in 24 cities in seven states. Specifically, teens with parents who had clear rules against underage drinking were 35 percent less likely to have attended a party with alcohol in the previous 30 days.
