Vehicle chase in California leads to arrests

North of Alameda, on May 7, two people were arrested in the Chapman neighborhood of Chico after a car chase that ended at approximately 6:30 p.m. The Sheriff's Department issued a statement that the chase began after police spotted what they believed to be a stolen vehicle.

The driver was now faces a number of drug charges, including possession of a controlled substance, transportation of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of burglary tools and possession of a butterfly knife. He is also charged with possession of stolen property, evading arrest and car theft. He is being held on $129,000 bail. The passenger was arrested on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. The charges were not specified. It is unknown whether she will face any additional charges related to the car chase.

Police allege that the driver of the car drove away from police officers at a high rate of speed, which inspired a chase through the neighborhood. The chase ended abruptly at the intersection of Hemlock and East 16th streets when the car blew a tire. The 38-year-old driver and his 29-year-old passenger were both taken into custody. The driver is reported to be participating in a Salvation Army Rehabilitation alternate custody program that allowed him to be released from Butte County Jail.

When a person is arrested, a criminal defense attorney may be able to help. Early in the proceedings, an attorney can advice persons accused with a crime during any police interrogations and argue for bail to allow pretrial release. Where there are multiple charges, an attorney may be able to negotiate a plea bargain that will allow for some of the charges to be dropped.
