Man could face jail for helping to plan assaults and murders

A California man could face life in prison if he is convicted of the gang related assault and murder charges to which he pleaded guilty. As part of his cooperation with authorities, he admitted that he took part in various gang crimes because he was directed to do so by leaders incarcerated in California prisons.

Top Court upholds DNA testing procedures in MD case

DNA testing procedures in California are more expansive than similar practices recently upheld in a U.S. Supreme Court ruling concerning a Maryland case. The ruling stems from a case involving the reinstatement of a rape charge after a DNA test was taken during an arrest on an unrelated charge. California is one of 26 states that allows DNA testing when arrested. The decision could convince authorities in these states to reopen older cases to look for new connections.

Pit bull owner charged with murder.

A California man stands accused of murder in conjunction with the violent mauling death of a 63 year-old woman. The 63-year-old woman died after being bitten somewhere between 150 and 200 times. Police used DNA evidence gathered from four pit bulls to charge the 29-year-old Californian. The investigation revealed DNA evidence on the dog's muzzles and coats that matched the blood of the 63-year-old victim.
