Reduced drug sentences possible for possession

California is considering reduced sentences for those who are convicted of possessing drugs for personal use. Legislation passed by the California Senate on Aug. 26 would change the meaning of "transporting" a drug to mean transporting it in order to sell it. The new definition means that someone who might face additional drug charges for transportation would only be charged with possession if they carried an amount under the threshold. Previously, transporting meant that a person could be charged for even walking down the street, no matter the amount of drugs they possessed.

Arraignment set for driver in fatal California car accident

A man was taken into custody on charges of driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter following a fatal car accident on Linda Vista Road and Tait Street in San Diego, a little after midnight on Aug. 15, 2013. The accident killed one man and injured another. The alleged at-fault driver is set to be arraigned on DUI charges on Aug. 19, 2013.

Registered sex offender charged with kidnapping woman

A California man was charged with allegedly kidnapping a woman from a retail store parking lot in Antioch. According to a prosecutor, the charges are related to multiple alleged sex crimes, as it was alleged that the man, who is already a registered sex offender, kidnapped the woman in order to sexually assault her.

California driver charged in fatal freeway accident

A man who allegedly drove drunk and struck a man who had exited his disabled vehicle was taken into custody on July 28, 2013. The accident occurred on 4:15 a.m. in the slow lane of Ventura Freeway in Encino near the Balboa Boulevard off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Teen alleges being sexually assaulted

A 15-year-old girl is claiming that two men, ages 24 and 30 locked her in a metal box and sexually assaulted her at a marijuana farm in Northern California. Both men face state charges relating to child sexual abuse that included unlawful sex with a minor and kidnapping to commit robbery or rape. In addition, the 30-year-old man faces charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor.
