46-year-old parolee faces drug charges

Authorities in Santa Clarita County, California, conducted a check on a 46-year-old parolee and took him into custody on Oct. 10 for alleged drug possession and drug sales. Deputies reported they found two forms of heroin, meth, marijuana and a weapon at his home. A representative for the sheriff's office said that their office is enforcing efforts to ensure that those on community supervision are compliant with the terms of their release. Officers from several agencies cooperated in the effort to check on individuals on probation and parole.

The parolee had been freed from custody early pursuant to California's Post Release Community Supervision program under AB109. However, in addition to the drug charges, officers also located drug paraphernalia, including pipes used to smoke meth and a digital scale. He also faces separate charges for violating his parole conditions and was held with no bail.

The representative further reported that the sheriff's department wants to help people on community supervision become productive members of society. In order to do this, law enforcement agencies are working to develop additional programs and looking at how resources are spent. They offer life skills courses once every three months so that those in the community will be able to pursue an education, find jobs, transition back into the community, and reduce the revolving door of jail or prison. They will continue to implement these types of operations in an effort to enhance public safety.

When someone on probation or parole violates the terms of his or her release by continued alleged drug activity, he or she could face additional charges if they are convicted. A criminal defense attorney may to negotiate a combined sentence through a plea agreement with the prosecution.
