Gang members convicted of murder in California bar mass shooting

Two Alameda County gang members were convicted of two murders and multiple counts of attempted murder on Nov. 20 for a 2011 mass shooting at an Oakland bar. The pair was found guilty on all 16 felony charges against them, which included enhancements for aggravating circumstances of gang crimes and mass murder. The men, ages 24 and 25, reportedly showed no emotion as the jury verdict was read. They received life in prison without the possibility of parole after their sentencing in February.

In April 2011, the 24-year-old exchanged heated words with a group of people standing at a bar and restaurant's front door. Prosecutors said that as that man was arguing with the men and beginning a shoving match, the 25-year-old approached the door with an assault rifle and began shooting into the establishment. At least 10 shots were fired, and a 22-year-old man and a 26-year-old man were killed. Five other people inside the bar were shot as well.

The gang members were allegedly trying to find members of a rival gang following an argument at the bar earlier that night.A gun was reportedly displayed during the verbal sparring, which prosecutors said prompted the duo to retrieve the assault rifle. None of the victims were identified as the men who participated in the earlier altercation, and no gang members at all were shown to be present at the bar when the shooting occurred.

Violent crimes like murder or robbery can bring even tougher sentences if they are determined to be gang crimes. A lawyer my be able to help clients accused of homicide or gang crimes with arranging a plea bargain with the court. This may result in a lessened prison sentence on lowered charges.
