Alleged gang members face 17-count indictment

Gang crimes can carry serious penalties, and defending these cases requires a thorough understanding of the charges and laws involved, as 10 alleged members of a San Francisco gang are now finding out. The gang at the center of the case, Central Divisadero Playas, is known in the Fillmore and Western Addition neighborhoods.

On Jan. 9, a federal grand jury indicted the 10 defendants on 17 total counts of drug trafficking, murder, racketeering and other charges. The indictment also involves a 2012 murder case in which a Compton man accused of pimping the daughter of two of those indicted was shot and killed.

Four of the named defendants, including two cousins, are being charged for crimes related to the killing of the Compton man. They were previously indicted late last year on racketeering and murder charges, but the newest indictment will take precedence. Two other defendants are being charged for the double murder of two men in the vicinity of the University of San Francisco on Aug. 14, 2008.

Several of the defendants are accused of trying to intimidate a witness who was part of another 2008 murder. Other charges include extortion, pimping, weapons violations and attempted murder. All but one of the defendants are facing racketeering conspiracy charges as alleged members of the gang. Prosecutors say that the activity has been going on since the mid-1990s.

All of the named defendants are currently in custody, and each faces a life prison sentence. Two of the defendants may even be looking at the death penalty. Violent crimes like aggravated assault, murder and use of a weapon carry stiff penalties. While the outcome of this case remains to be seen, a strong defense can help those accused of violent crimes get the best outcome possible.
