German tourist killed in Union Square

A 21-year-old California man, who was wanted in connection with the death of a German tourist in 2010, was found in Hayward, and U.S. Marshals were able to take him into custody. The shooting, which is believed to be a gang crime, occurred outside a comedy club near Union Square. The alleged gang members were fighting outside the venue, and at least one of them opened fire. The German woman, who was a bystander, was killed.

Six other suspected gang members face murder charges in the case. The 21-year-old man recently taken into custody was wanted on suspicion of being an accessory to murder. Police believe part of the group belonged to the Valencia Gardens gang, and the rest are alleged members of the Western Addition Gang. The 21-year-old man was featured on the website "Northern California Most Wanted," which is operated by a group of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies known as the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center.

The victim was a teacher from the Hanover region of Germany. She was traveling with her husband, and they were celebrating their anniversary and her birthday. The couple was looking for a place to eat when the woman was shot. Two other bystanders were also wounded in the shooting.

An individual accused of being part of a gang-related shooting may wish to allow an attorney to review his or her case. A person convicted of murder or accessory to murder can face serious penalties, including a long prison term. A shooting in a public place may involve several possible shooters. It may be possible to prove that the person being charged didn't fire a weapon or wasn't involved with the group that is thought to have fired the shots.
