Doctor accused of possession of controlled drug, charges filed

A California doctor who was accused of distributing a number of controlled substances to those who did not have a legitimate medical reason for needing the drugs was indicted on 15 counts. For each count, the man is facing a prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of $1 million.

The doctor was first taken into custody after authorities conducted a traffic stop on his vehicle on March 8. He was accused of driving under the influence of drugs and of having controlled substances in his possession. He posted bail but was taken into custody a month later after a witness called the authorities for the man allegedly appearing intoxicated in his vehicle with a child inside. Authorities confronted him at a nearby park where he was playing with his child. They reportedly found methadone and other substances in his possession.

On April 14, he pleaded guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance and for child endangerment, for which he was sentenced to 72 days in jail. The doctor's license was revoked by the Medical Board of California on Aug. 26. On Sept. 8, he was taken into custody and made his first appearance for this case in court. He posted $75,000 bail. His bail review was scheduled for Sept. 15, though the outcome was not reported.

The consequences of certain drug charges could include jail sentences, fines and probation. Someone who is accused of drug possession could fight the charges or seek to have the charges dismissed, such as if there is evidence that the drugs that were taken for evidence did not belong to the accused. Otherwise, if the police illegally searched a vehicle, home or person and found the drugs, the court may determine that the evidence is inadmissible.
