Police dog leads to arrest of murder suspect in California

On March 1, a 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder of two people in Livermore. He was apprehended with the help of a police dog.

According to authorities, police were dispatched to the area of Altamont Creek Drive and Winding Stream Drive around 4:30 p.m. after receiving reports about three men arguing. Responding officers found one man dead from a gunshot wound and another man critically wounded. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

A male suspect fled the scene in a car. He was later pulled over in a traffic stop, during which he resisted arrest. A police dog subdued him with a bite, and he was taken into custody.

Officers searched a nearby church and discovered what they believed to be the murder weapon. The investigation led authorities to the conclusion that the men had been arguing over some sort of illegal contraband. An unidentified source said it was a gun deal gone bad. The deaths were the first murders in Livermore, which is known as a quiet neighborhood, since December 2012.

When facing a violent crime charge as serious as murder, a defendant may benefit from immediately requesting an attorney and invoking their right to remain silent. Having a criminal defense attorney present during all police questioning could prevent a defendant from making statements that may be used against them in court. In addition to protecting a defendant's rights, an attorney could scrutinize the evidence in the case for any weaknesses that may be used to the defendant's advantage. If the evidence against them is strong, a lawyer may advise a defendant to accept a plea bargain that mitigates some of the charges in exchange for a guilty plea.
