Man accused of ramming motorcycle cop with pickup

A 28-year-old California man was taken into police custody Aug. 17 on suspicion of attempted murder of a Los Angeles Police Department officer. The accused man had been involved in a hit-and-run collision earlier that day, and California Highway Patrol say that they believe the traffic accident was intentional.

The LAPD officer, who was on a marked police motorcycle, was allegedly hit more than once by a white pickup truck. The incident took place on the southbound side of Interstate 5 near Hasley Canyon Road at around 9:30 a.m. After sustaining injuries, the LAPD officer was treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. That evening, the man accused of causing the accident was taken into custody near San Diego for attempted murder, and his 2016 Toyota Tundra pickup truck was seized.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol said that investigators have been using statements from witnesses and the injured LAPD officer to determine what happened. According to what they have learned from the statements, investigators believe that the pickup truck driver hit the officer on purpose. The motorcycle was reportedly pushed a substantial distance by the impact. There were no reports about what may have led up to the highway incident.

A person who has been accused of attempted murder after a car crash may want to work with a criminal defense attorney to argue for a reduced charge. An attorney may help by arguing that the collision was an accident and any evidence that may demonstrate otherwise is unreliable. If witness statements are the only evidence of malicious intent, the lawyer may argue that this evidence is not enough to prove attempted murder beyond a reasonable doubt.
