Police say California man is responsible for 2004 killings

A 38-year-old California man taken into custody for allegedly murdering his brother has also been accused of killing a couple on a beach in August 2004. The man has pleaded not guilty in the charges related to his brother. Charges related to the couple's death have not yet been filed.

The couple, a 22-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man, were shot to death near Jenner where they were camping. Both were still zipped into their sleeping bags. Police say they believe they were selected at random.

The sheriff of Sonoma County said at a May 5 news conference that the man was well-known to police. He also said that the man had been identified shortly after the couple's murder as a person of interest. According to the sheriff, the man had information about their murder that only the killer could have known. It is expected that the case will be taken before the district attorney soon.

A person who is facing charges for homicide might want to speak to an attorney about defense strategies. If the person wishes to plead not guilty, there might be a number of avenues of defense depending on the evidence. Forensic evidence could be contaminated, and it might be possible to raise doubt about eyewitness accounts. A person might also have the option to plea bargain. This would involve pleading guilty, often to lesser charges, and receiving a lighter sentence. An attorney might also look into whether evidence was obtained legally and whether a client's rights were observed while being questioned. If not, some evidence could be excluded.
