Tiger Woods' DUI arrest highlights prescription medication issues

Each year in California, over 200,000 people are arrested for driving under the influence. While many people think of DUI as driving drunk, these charges can even be related to medications prescribed by a doctor. On May 29 in Florida, 14-time champion golfer Tiger Woods was arrested and jailed for four hours on suspicion of a DUI.

Woods attributed the DUI arrest to a reaction to prescription medicine for pain following back surgery he underwent five weeks prior. He was arrested at around 3 a.m. and held in the Palm Beach County jail before being released on his own recognizance. Woods later issued a statement emphasizing that alcohol was not involved in his arrest.

Woods ranks second on the PGA Tour's list of career wins, but he has not competed for almost four months. His back injury, surgery and recovery have prohibited him from competing for almost four months. Woods, 41, has had multiple back surgeries since 2014.

The golfer had written on his website that the surgery provided a level of pain relief that he had not experienced in years. Following the surgery, he was prescribed several medications to help support his recovery. In a public statement, Woods attributed the arrest to a "mix of medications," apologizing for the incident leading to the arrest.

Drivers are often arrested for DUIs when alcohol isn't involved. These incidents can involve prescribed and non-prescribed medications and are not detectable in roadside tests. After a DUI arrest, especially one involving prescribed medication, a defense lawyer can help protect the defendant's rights and reputation.

There are a number of possible courses of action available to a person charged with DUI. A criminal defense attorney can provide important advice and analysis of a DUI case to determine the best way to proceed.
