Drug take-back day: 5 tons of prescription drugs turned in

Many Californians are addicted to prescription drugs and may face criminal charges if they are caught in possession of medications that they aren't prescribed. In cases involving opiate medications, some people turn to illicit substances such as heroin in order to get high when the prescription drugs no longer work for them and because heroin might be cheaper.

In an effort to fight against the wave of prescription drug abuse and addiction, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in tandem with local law enforcement agencies held a national drug take-back day. This event was held at locations across California for four hours on Oct. 28. During that time, more than 5 tons of expired or unused prescription drugs were collected in Imperial and San Diego counties alone.

Law enforcement agencies have drop boxes for people to discard their old or unwanted prescription drugs. This may help to keep others from taking the drugs. Prescription drug addiction has become a serious problem across California and throughout the U.S. Addiction is a disease that may lead to people becoming caught up in the criminal justice system.

People who are facing prescription drug charges might want to retain criminal defense attorneys who are experienced in handling these types of offenses. The lawyers may be able to secure alternative sentences that help their clients to get the treatment that they need instead of simply being jailed. In some cases, the lawyers may be able to win dismissal of the charges in exchange for their clients completing treatment and remaining sober. In other cases, the attorneys may identify problems with how the stops, seizures and searches were conducted by the police. The lawyers may then file evidentiary motions and argue for the suppression of the evidence against their clients.
