Multiple people charged in shooting that left 1 dead

Authorities reported on Jan. 2 that a California man was taken into custody after he was accused of being involved in a shooting that left one person dead and two others with injuries. According to authorities, the 31-year-old man was alleged to be a reputed gang member.

Just after midnight on Dec. 2, a 43-year-old man was shot and killed at a restaurant locating in the 100 block of East Olive Avenue in Monrovia. Authorities alleged that the accused man was at the location when he pulled out a gun when a verbal confrontation with his older brother escalated. He allegedly shot the gun into the crowd. Several others who were not involved in the confrontation suffered injuries.

The 31-year-old man turned himself into authorities. He was charged with murder. His 34-year-old brother and a 33-year-old woman were also taken into custody following the incident. They were both facing one murder charge, four counts of attempted murder and two counts of resisting an officer. The brothers' parents were also charged with being an accessory after the fact. Their next court appearance was scheduled to occur on Jan. 16.

Those who are facing murder charges could have their lives seriously impacted. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder, a person who is convicted on the charges could face life in prison and other legal consequences. A criminal law attorney may open an independent investigation into the claims and utilize forensic technologies and expert witness testimony to build a strong defense against the accusations. The attorney may also look for holes in the authorities' investigation in order to demonstrate that the accusations put forth by the prosecution do not match the evidence collected during the police investigation.
