A 27-year-old California man smiled and laughed during his sentencing following his trial for murder, disheartening the prosecutor and family of the 20-year-old woman who had been shot dead. When given the opportunity to say something to the court as well as family members of the deceased, he thanked his own family for supporting him. After that, he was led away to serve 122 years in prison.
Our justice system exists to ensure that those who have been accused of a crime get a fair trial at which they can present evidence to defend themselves. Prosecutors are held to a high standard of having to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that someone is guilty of committing a crime. If that burden of proof cannot be met, the defendant cannot be found guilty. Our justice system recently held true when rape charges against an Alameda County Sheriff's deputy were dropped.
